Shelter Island

Last weekend we went to Shelter Island.  It is an island in between the North and South Fork of Long Island surrounded on three sides by the Shelter Island Sound and by Gardiner's Bay to the east.  We took the LIE to the end and then Sound Avenue to Greenport, where you take a ferry to the island.  You can also access it from a southern ferry.  We brought a rabbit and a lot of wine, cheese, and some bread, of course. A semolina bread with fennel seeds and candied oranges.  This bread smelled amazing as it baked.  I felt bad for my neighbors.  It made excellent french toast.    Shelter Island is beautiful.  There is not a lot...

The Hoppin

For all my friends weddings I tend to make some custom outfit. This year my good friends John and Nami Hoppin were married and this was the dress I made for it. It was SUCH a hit I decided to put it out. Today is John's birthday so I thought what better day to release it. So here it is: The Hoppin.  This is a pic of me wearing it at the wedding which was at Roberta's and really was one of my favorite days ever. xx photo by Troy Bayless

Charlemagne Palestine

Yesterday, I went to Electronic Arts Intermix on 22nd Street in Chelsea to see Charlemagne Palestine, a composer, performer, and visual artist living in Belgium.  He was originally a New Yorker, and lived here from birth in 1946 until the mid-70s. He made a lot of ritual actions where he chanted repetitively or clapped his hands against his body, often while holding a video camera, so that the movies that were made also became artwork in addition to the performances.  There are strange props in the videos: stuffed animals, clove cigarettes, scarves, and cognac.  He is an associate of Tony Conrad and is often associated with minimalism, so everything goes on very repetitively and for a long time.  We set...

Rob's Birthday Party

Last night we went to Rob "Bronco" Bryn's birthday party.  You might know Rob from around the way if you've been around North Brooklyn, he is the lead singer in Wild Yaks and wrote and directed a couple of plays.  He turned the ripe old age of 34 yesterday, and we went to Best Pizza to celebrate.  When I first moved to NYC I crashed at Rob's house, smoking Tops roll-ups in a room with seven dead christmas trees February 3rd 2006.  We had a party and burned the trees in an oil drum, flames rose three stories high.  We lived on the fourth floor of the Men's Colony at 119 Ingraham Street, the bathroom in the hall, across the...

Plants

This weekend marked the beginning of the growing season at our apartment in Bushwick.  I live on the fourth floor, so I grow in window boxes.  There are more creative ways to do it, but this is the easiest to manage.  I like to grow herbs for infusion into syrups for drinks or dessert, and this year we grew some lettuce, since lettuce is very easy to grow and always handy to use - eat your vegetables.   The guy who lives in the apartment across the yard spent last week making the awesome wildstyle graffiti mural.  The spray cans clattered when he shook them.  It was cool to watch someone painting for their own enjoyment - the guy's apartment...
